Junior ‘B’ Football Competition: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-14 St Lomans 3-9

Mullingar Shamrocks came out on top in this exciting Junior ‘B’ match played in Springfield on Tuesday evening. The teams were level at the interval 1-6 to 2-3 with Neill Hannigan responsible for the Shamrocks goal. Shamrocks began well after the restart with a second goal from Neil Hannigan and a point by Zach Aherne but these scored kicked-off a St Loman’s response at the end of which they were four points to the good. Their scores included a Barney Rock type 1982 All-Ireland final lobbed goal from Conor Cochrane.

Shamrocks regrouped and a fine point from a mark by Gary Corroon began the revival and a brilliant goal by Ollie MacNamara levelled matters. Ollie turned his marker and held off the attention of several defenders to crash the ball to the net. Zach Aherne kicked a fine point and then Zach and Ollie combined to send Gary Corroon through on goal. Without breaking stride, Gary crashed the ball to the net in as good a finish as you could hope to see. Gary was immediately called ashore, his night’s work completed. Ollie MacNamara blasted another goal and added a point; Caoilin Walsh pointed and so too did Marc Eivers to bring the Shamrocks total to 5-14. A comfortable win in the end that seemed unlikely 15 minutes into the second half.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Seán Hynes; Eamonn Breslin, Aaron Purcell, Aaron Russell (Conor Fitzgerald); Niall Hardiman (Enda Keating), Emmet Walsh, Pearse Corroon; John O’Reilly (0-1), Zach Aherne (0-2); Brian Farrell (0-2), Marc Eivers (0-2), Neill Hannigan (2-1) [Caoilin Walshe 0-1]; Trevor Keena (Mark Shaw), Gary Corroon (1-4) [Adam Boyle], Ollie MacNamara (2-1).

LGFA U16 Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 7-9 Athlone 4-14

On Tuesday evening Mullingar Shamrocks travelled to Athlone and defeated the host team in the second round of the Championship. Despite missing a few players due to holiday season, the team included a number of our Under-14 team and it was a very competitive game from start to finish. Together as a team all players performed exceptionally well.

At half time it was level at 3-3 to 1-9. After the break and good guidance from coaches on improving technique, the girls came back on field and played well for first 20 minutes. For last 10 minutes the team played with great speed and skill. Showing great teamwork, they went on the attack and scored 4 goals and 4 points in quick succession. In the last part of game the Shamrocks girls fitness was evident and in both halves Abigail’s goal keeping skills were superb, she saved penalties and blocked many many strong attempts at goal.

Thank you to coaches and supporters. Congratulations and well done to players for a great game of football.

LGF Div.3 League Final: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-7 Caulry 5-7

There was no joy for Mullingar Shamrocks in Caulry on Thursday evening in the League Div. 3 final as Caulry were convincing and deserving winners on this occasion. Mullingar Shamrocks dominated the first 15 minutes and with points from Emma Morris (0-2) and Holly McCormack and a goal from Mia Gilligan, Shamrocks deservedly led by 1-3 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter. Caulry however took control at this stage and pinned Mullingar Shamrocks into their own half for the remainder of the half. Goals from Ava Hallisey, Jasmine Maloney and Lia Hallisey were damaging and when Megan Clinton sent a screamer to the net on the stroke of half time the title was effectively secured for Caulry as they entered the break with a lead of 4-4 to 1-3. There was lots of great defending done during this siege.

To the credit of the Mullingar Shamrocks young players, they never stopped trying and they matched Caulry on the scoreboard during the second half, a half that saw Cliodhna Spellman maintain her wing-back scoring form with two more points. Emma Morris scored two also to no avail as on the night Caulry were too good. It was a beautiful night for football played at a top-class venue. Mount Temple too is a blaze of colour. South Westmeath is blooming and probably booming also.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Katie Kelly; Phoebe Cadwaladr (Eve Byrne), Sophie Hegarty, Eve Hynes (Alessia Hassett); Shona McNicholas, Mairead Newman, Cliodhna Spellman (0-2); Laura Whitelaw, Caoimhe Gaffney; Michaela O’Connor, Emma Morris (0-4), Jenna Kelly (Jagoda Bartosiewicz); Mia Gilligan (1-0) [Tamara Molloy], Holly McCormack (0-1) [Sophie Russell], Jasmin Haugh (Jodi Aherne)

Under-19 Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-14 Millmore Gaels 2-9

Our under 19s travelled to the excellent pitch in Ballymore last Thursday evening to face Millmore Gaels in the under 19 championship and produced a spirited and skilful display to emerge victorious on a 2-14 to 2-9 scoreline. Credit to all the players involved who followed Vinny Timoney’s game plan throughout and thus deservedly won the spoils. Team coach Gary Corroon’s pre match drills hit the right note and the visitors were never headed. Team captain Oliver MacNamara led by example in the forward line finishing with 7 points, Mark Shaw was an able accomplice in the full forward line and his well taken goal in the second half was crucial. He and Aaron Russell also fired over 2 points apiece and Aaron and Daithí Ó Mairtín cleverly linked the play in the forward division while the industrious Caoilinn Walsh and the tigerish James Devine worked tirelessly to prevent opposition attacks. Further back, Mikey Curley produced two super saves at critical junctures while Ben White, Enda Keating and William O’ Reilly were tenacious and clever in the full back line. Adam Boyle and Ciaran Kiernan made a number of important defensive interventions and Callum Rigney was imperious at wing back, his late goal sealing victory. At midfield Darragh Hughes and Luke McCabe ensured that Shamrocks won a plentiful supply of ball and both kicked important scores and subs Matt Shaw and Donnacha Maguire played integral roles on their introduction.

Under-14 LGF: Mullingar Shamrocks 4-5 Milltown 1-8

The match took place on what was a hot summer night. There were superb performances by multiple players on the pitch. The back line was impenetrable. Sarah Ford and Roisin Nohilly had outstanding individual performances but there was a player who kept the goals safe making multiple saves and with 5 mins to go Abigail Molloy came outfield and was magical. She supported the spectacular midfield Naima Whelan to push forward and score in those final minutes, also scoring herself. Special mention also to Katie Matthews and Aoife Murphy whose marking was fantastic.

The final score was – 4-5 to 1-8

Under-15 Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 6-8 Coralstown-Kinnegad 2-3

It’s been an exceptionally busy week for Shamrocks on the field and the under 15 squad continued the feel good vibe of the week’s activities with a win in the opening round of the under 15 championship against a physically strong Coralstown Kinnegad at the latter’s grounds. The scoring radar was slightly off in the opening half but Shamrocks managed to lead by 8 points at Mickey Dan Murtagh’s short whistle. Ben McNamee’s opening goal and a bullet like rebound from the alert Ted Aherne after Ben’s penalty came off the post were the key scores. The second half saw an improvement in the visitors’ display with Ty Masterson, Criostoir Ormsby, Ben Sheerin, Andrzej Opala, Paul Keating and Charlie Foy most prominent. Criostoir, Rory McCaul and Ben McNamee notched three pointers in the second moiety with every player making a significant contribution.
