Remembering our GAAZA Day - in every sense, a triumph of organisation, of generosity, and of
humanity.
The idea for a Family Fun Day in aid of Gaza was born out of a simple but heartfelt conversation. A small group of concerned mothers, whose children are members of Mullingar Shamrock’s GAA club, spoke of their feelings of helplessness as they watched the devastation, destruction, and starvation endured by the people of Gaza. Determined to act in solidarity, they approached David Nohilly, club Chairperson, for support—and received it without hesitation. From there, a dedicated team of volunteers stepped forward, offering their skills, time, energy and ideas to organise what would become a hugely successful community event. Special mention goes to Ollie McNamee for setting a challenging and fun obstacle course, and to Derek Sheridan for providing the resources and generosity that fine-tuned the event.
To boost fundraising efforts, a GoFundMe page was created and shared widely on Shamrock’s socialmedia and by its members. A trio of dedicated organisers reached out to local businesses for contributions. The traders and business establishments of Mullingar responded generously and enthusiastically, providing monetary donations or raffle prizes- including multiple gift vouchers- to support the cause. This raffle generated substantial monies on the day and significantly enhanced the online donations.
On September 13th, the club grounds were transformed into a vibrant hub of community spirit. Despite forecasts of wet and windy weather, the rain kindly cooperated by holding off until after the festivities ended. The club grounds were a hive of activity, with the start of the GAAZA fundraiser timed nicely to coincide with the finish of a GAA sponsored cycle. With a coffee truck in situ, and music pouring from the clubhouse through the outside speakers and across the pitch, the tone was perfectly set when the first underage cyclists arrived back to the grounds. As the afternoon wore on, families arrived in great numbers, with their pockets and their hearts full. Club members and visitors from outside the club took part in the obstacle challenge, providing excellent camaraderie and competition. In addition to this there were lots of children’s activities, delicious treats on offer in the clubhouse bake-sale, and outstanding live music provided by Some One’s Sons and Get Hitched. The raffle itself drew eager participation, and the atmosphere was one of warmth, generosity, and solidarity.
A highlight of the day was the Silent Walk in solidarity with the people of Gaza. Emotional and deeply moving, it reminded all in attendance of the true purpose of the event: to stand together as a community, showing empathy, compassion, and support for those facing oppression and hardship. The walk became a symbol of unity, reinforcing that this was more than a fundraiser—it was an act of collective conscience and an example of one of the greatest strengths of the GAA: it’s exceptional ability to be a positive force within the local community.
By the day’s end, not only had substantial funds been raised for the Palestine Red Crescent Society, totalling almost €16,000, but the event also left a lasting impression on those who attended. For many, especially teenagers and young adults, the message was clear: every voice matters, and when communities come together, they CAN make a difference.
The Family Fun Day for Gaza was, in every sense, a triumph of organisation, of generosity, and of humanity.
