Twenty Five Years Ago Today
On this date, 15 May 1999, Westmeath beat Kerry to win the All-Ireland Under-21 title. The journey to the title included victories over Kildare (2-14 to 1-14) after extra time in a replay, Wicklow (1-11 to 1-10) and Laois (1-9 to 0-10) also in a replay in the Leinster final.
A convincing defeat of Monaghan (2-10 to 0-8) was followed by an 0-1 2 to 0-9 victory over Kerry in the final played in Limerick.
Looking at these results, it is clear that this team knew how not to lose in the tightest of finishes. Alex Ferguson’s squeaky bum time was meaningless to these Westmeath warriors.
It was a special occasion for Mullingar Shamrocks as Micheál Burke and Brian Lambden lined out in the two wing-back positions.
It is understood that KC Sports today honoured Brian Lambden contribution to the victory with a special anniversary cake and a specially ordained relaxing afternoon for Brian.
Now is a good time to remind our members that on Saturday at 2.00 pm in Navan, Westmeath take the field against Down in the All-Ireland Under-20 B final.
Micheál Burke will be there again as part of the Westmeathgaaofficial management; Shane Ormsby lines out at centre field; Dylan Franzoni is part of the match day panel; Eoin Doran and Ryan Kelly are members of the extended panel.
Best of luck to all involved, especially the Mullingar Shamrocks FIVE.
