ACL Div. 1: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-11 Coralstown-Kinnegad 0-14
Mullingar Shamrocks completed their ACL Div. 1 campaign in Springfield on Sunday morning with a solid display against Coralstown-Kinnegad in what was an excellent game of football characterised by several high quality scores from both sides.
Wind-assisted Shamrocks began slowly and conceded three points to the direct running Kinnegad men in the opening minutes courtesy of Darren Giles (0-2) and Brian Cooney. Shamrocks settled into the game and a great catch by Paddy Fagan created a chance for Killian Daly who pointed. A series of controlled passes involving several players concluded with a Denis Corroon point and a catch, turn and shot by Jordan Warde for a point brought the sides level. Two pointed frees by Darren Giles restored the Kinnegad lead before Paddy Fagan added another point to the Shamrocks number. Points by Shane Fleming and Rory Cole restored Kinnegad’s three point lead (0-7 to 0-4). Shamrocks controlled the next ten minutes or so and outscored Kinnegad 0-5 to 0-2 before the half-time whistle. Killian Daly and Brian Cooney exchanged points before Denis Corroon pointed twice from frees. Conor O’Brien collected from Lorcan Smyth’s sideline delivery and equalised and Kilian Daly’s third point of the morning secured the lead for Shamrocks. It was short lived as a point from play by Rory Cole levelled the match at 0-9 each when Alan Coyne blew the half-time whistle.
Denis Corroon and Wayne Fox exchanged points before a John O’Reilly point restored the Shamrocks lead (0-11 to 0-10). Unfortunately, this proved to be Shamrocks last score and four unanswered points by Fox, Darren Giles (0-2) and Brian Cooney secured the league points for the visitors. A great goal-line block by Conn O’Hanlon is worthy of mention and in our final attack Denis Corroon’s blasted free was saved on the goal-line.
