Div.1 Féile Final: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-3 St Loman’s 1-5
In the end there was no title but the Mullingar Shamrocks boys emerged with honour intact form this Div.1 Féile Final played in Cusack Park. A physically stronger St Loman’s dominated a young Shamrocks team from start to finish but a combination of poor finishing, good saves by Óisin Gavin and superb defending meant that the scoreboard operator had a relatively relaxed evening. The battling efforts of Ted Aherne, James Ryan and Rory McCaul were particularly noticeable during this stage of the game.
The outstanding Sean Byrne had the opening point from St Loman’s after 9 minutes, in the sixteenth minutes his wing back colleague Ross Tully had the game’s only goal with Conor Casey competing the St Loman’s first half total just before the interval. In between these scores, Shamrocks too had their chances. The best of these was a great dipping shot from Ted Aherne that was well saved by Seamus O’Brien and eventually scrambled to safety. Unfortunately, the goal that Shamrocks needed failed to materialise.
Shamrocks matched St Loman’s on the scoreboard in the second half that began with Sean Byrne pointing a long-range free in the best manner of John Heslin. Ted Aherne scored a fine point for Shamrocks in the fourth minute an effort that was balanced by another pointed free, this time by Niall Brady. A brilliant run by Hugo Corroon ended with a fine point and a great interception by Zac Masterson set Zak Coyne free who thundered upfield and released Hugo Corroon who finished in characteristic style for Shamrocks third point. The final score belonged to Conor Casey who kicked a fine point from play to complete St Loman’s scoring.
Well done to all involved in this Féile campaign and in particular thanks to the management of Barry Kelly, Barry Maguire, Adrian Regan, Seamus Wallace and Derek Sheeran for their work with this group of players.
