ACL Div.1 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-12 Tyrrellspass 1-5.
Mullingar Shamrocks began the 2023 season with a deserved victory over Tyrrellspass in the ACL Div.1 game played in Springfield. Wind assisted Tyrrellspass made the early running and opened the scoring with a pointed free from Dean McNicholas and a goal form Kieran Geraghty whose speculative lob escaped the grasp of Eoin Doran who was making his senior competitive debut. Dillon Matthews pointed for Shamrocks with a characteristic run before Dean McNicholas form a mark and Denis Corroon from a free exchanged points. Aaron O’ Brien and Denis did likewise (1-3 to 0-3) before a great Shamrocks moved ended in the Tyrrellspass keeper saving well from Shane Ormsby who was also making his senior competitive debut. Denis Corroon and Patrick Fagan pointed to reduce the deficit to the minimum before Dean McNicholas added his third point of the morning. Another Denis Corroon point brought the interval scoreboard to a very satisfactory 1-4 to 0-6 from a Mullingar Shamrocks perspective.
Mullingar Shamrocks dominated the second half that began with Jordan Warde and Thomas Ryan sharing points. This was to the final score of the day for Tyrrellspass as gradually Shamrocks added points from Patrick Fagan (0-3 – one a great long range effort that wouldn’t appear in any coaches manual), Denis Corroon and the final one another great long range effort from Zach Aherne that sealed the victory on an 0-12 to 1-5 scoreline.
The day on which a player makes his senior competitive debut for his club is a special day in the career of any player and marks a significant milestone in a player’s development. This was Eoin Doran and Shane Ormsby’s special occasion and both players acquitted themselves well and will no doubt have long and we hope successful careers with the club.
