Des Says Farewell ...
Last night (22 December), in St Loman's, Des Maguire said goodbye to 'his boys' as his time as Chairman of the Football Committee of the Westmeath County Committee came to an end. This is one of the offices that is limited to a five year term and Des leaves on a high with the satisfaction of seeing Westmeath winning the inaugural Tailteann Cup in the final year of his stewardship.
Always popular with the players, Des was always positive in his approach to Westmeath football matters. This was never more obvious 19 years ago when Des made the most significant phone call in the history of Westmeath GAA, the call to Ard na Bothaire which resulted in the appointment of Paidi as the Westmeath senior football manager. The rest is history.
Des steps down from what was his second term as Football Committee Chairperson as he also served in the 2007-12 period.
We can be sure that Des has no plans to ride off into the sunset and no doubt he will continue to contribute to the well being of Westmeath GAA.
