Div. 2 League: St Mary’s, Rochfortbridge 2-8 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-6.
On the week that Bob Dylan won the Nobel Prize for Literature it is appropriate to use one of the Laureate’s lines to describe the conditions: you didn’t need the weather man to say which way the wind was blowing. On a morning that was dreadful for football Shamrocks dug deep into their back catalogue to field a team which in the circumstances was an achievement in itself and those who made the journey to Rochfortbridge are to be commended for their commitment to the Shamrocks cause. Michael O’Reilly (yes, the same man that played and won in the 1986 county final and won seven more in between), Paul Aherne, Barry Maguire and Eddie Casey all saw service at some stage in what was a time curtailed match. Shamrocks enjoyed the advantage of wind and rain in the first-half, scored 0-5 but trailed at the interval. At the final whistle, St Mary’s Rochfortbridge led by 2-8 to 0-6 and moved a step closer to securing promotion to Div. 1. Daragh Ryan made a few fine saves that kept the score-line reasonably respectable; the performance of Tye Adamson was also worthy of note. Tye, who has been one of the success stories of Shamrocks this year with his transition from minor to senior, scored three really good points in the opening half. Ross Corroon, who has also made a breakthrough to senior ranks this year, scored 0-2 and Brendan O’Reilly (who took the field with his brother Kenneth and father.) scored 0-1. Our survival in Div.2 is hanging by a thread.
