Westmeath LGF Under-14 C Championship Final: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-7 Milltownpass 4-5.
The Under-14 girls of Mullingar Shamrocks and Milltonwpass enjoyed a great battle for this Under-14 title before the Milltownpass girls secured the title with a four point victory. Both clubs deserved to be complimented on fielding two immaculately kitted-out teams for the final: credit too to the Westmeath LGFA for producing a nice coloured A4 sheet programme for the match.
Milltownpass generally dominated the first half but great defending by the Shamrocks girls led by full back Sarah Forde and Aya Haccini kept the scores to a minimum. Caoimhe Burke, Orla O’Brien and Molly Ryan pointed for Tyrrellspass before Caoimhe Farrell replied with a similar score for Shamrocks. Orlagh O’Brien goaled for Milltownpass but this was balanced by a brilliant Abigail Molloy strike to get Shamrocks back into the game. Abigail then added a point to reduce the gap to the minimum before a Caoimhe Burke pointed free extended the Milltownpass lead shortly before the interval with the scoreboard reading 1-4 to 1-2.
Shamrocks played really well after the restart and points by Abigail Molloy from a free and from play by Grace Daly (back on the field after a first half injury) brough the teams level (1-4 each). A great point from a free by Abigail Molly put Shamrocks ahead. The lead was short lived. A great Emily Forde save prevented a certain goal but there was nothing Emily could do when Orlagh O’Brien raced through a slammed the ball to the Shamrocks net to restore the lead to Milltownpass. A Caoimhe Burke goal from a free extended the lead (3-4 to 1-5). Katie Matthews pointed but Orlagh O’Brien raced through for another great goal, her third of the game (We understand Orlagh’s first cousin plays midfield for Mullingar Shamrocks senior team. He doesn’t score three goals from midfield). Abigail Molloy scored a superb point from a free but this was neutralised by another point from Orlagh O’Brien (4-5 to 1-7). A goal from Abigail Molloy gave Shamrocks hope but time was against the girls and at the final whistle Milltownpass had four points to spare despite the best efforts of our girls.
