Jim McHugh Garrycastle Under-12 Tournament: St Loman’s 5-12 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-4.
St Loman’s guided by Aidan Canning finished well on top in this meeting of two well coached sides in Springfield in the semi-final of the Jim McHugh Garrycastle tournament. Shamrocks qualified for this stage of the competition with several comprehensive victories but on this occasion were no match for the neighbours up the road. St Loman’s were skilful, their work rate was impressive, and their combination play was devoid of selfishness. Although outplayed by a physically stronger team, the Mullingar Shamrocks players produced several bouts of fine football, their tackling was brave and they chased the game to the end.
Shamrocks were first to score with a difficult Scott Farrelly pointed free; Daragh Daly added a second pointed free within minutes. After a relatively even opening ten minutes St Loman’s two goals in quick succession by Con Raleigh and Michael Long proved to be the vital scores. A great save by Tom McCaul who was Shamrocks best player on the night prevented a third goal but two more goals by Jack Corroon and Shane Canning ended the game as a contest and at half time St Loman’s were ahead on a 4-3 to 0-2 scoreline. St Loman’s added 1-9 to their first half total with Michael Brennan scoring the fifth goal; a Colm Clinton point from a free and a Jamie Timoney point from play completed the Shamrocks total.
