Fair Green Shopping Centre LGF Senior Championship: St Mary’s Rochfortbridge 2-14 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-4.

Without the injured Máiread Newman and Sophie Hegarty, Mullingar Shamrocks’, interest in the Fairgreen Shopping Centre senior football championship ended on Sunday in the wind and rain as St Mary’s carved out a ten-point winning margin in their home venue. St Mary’s attacked early and often and clipped five points on to the scoreboard in the opening eight minutes. Shamrocks responded and Anna Jones, on her comeback from injury netted in the tenth minute and Shamrocks came close to doubling their total from the resultant restart but the intervention of Karen McDermott prevented a second goal. The Bridge responded with two points and an Ava Balfe goal to severely damage Shamrocks’ chances. Emma Morris pointed a free but at the half-time break Shamrocks trailed by 1-10 to 1-1 and were under severe pressure.
As usual the players responded to the challenge and quickly reduced the deficit of four points with a second goal from Anna Jones after she rounded the Rochfortbridge goalkeeper Amy Cully; Emma Morris pointed her second free, Anna Jones added a point as did Chloe Smullen but that was our final score as Rochfortbridge resumed where they had ended the first half and tagged on an additional 1-4 to secure a comfortable win and the semi-final place that came with it.
A disappointing end to a season in which the committed group of players worked hard in the quest for the elusive senior title, but it wasn’t to be. We thank them for their efforts for the club.
