John Daly
Mullingar Shamrocks received the sad news on Friday of the untimely death of John Daly after a relatively short illness. John was a member of the history making Shamrocks team that won the club’s first county senior title in 1964, playing at left corner-forward on that special occasion when St Mary’s, Rochfortbridge were defeated. He was in the same position in 1966 when Shamrocks defeated Maryland to win their second county title. On this occasion he was joined on the team by his brother Noel, in goal, who was later to serve the club as chairman. In 1979, when Shamrocks began to emerge from a period in the competitive wilderness and reached the county final, a third Daly brother, Liam played at corner back on the team. The contribution of the Daly family to the Shamrocks club has been substantial and John maintained a life-long interest in the club and its wellbeing. The Mullingar Shamrocks club expresses sincere sympathy to John’s wife Kitty, to his sons Derek, Colm, Sinead and Áine, to his brothers Tom, Noel and Liam and his sisters Anne and Marie as well as to his extended family.
Reposing at his home on Monday, September 12th from 4pm until 8pm.
Funeral Mass on Tuesday 13th September at 10am in The Cathedral of Christ the King.
