Westmeath Minor Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-13 Multyfarnham 2-17.

Mullingar Shamrocks were unlucky losers after extra-time to Multyfarnham in Springfield last night (Wednesday) in the quarter-final of the Westmeath minor football championship. Shamrocks played their best football of the year in the opening half and were 0-7 ahead when the half-time whistle sounded. Like their junior club-mates of the previous week, the minors were unable to maintain the momentum and Multyfarnham staged a strong recovery and had drawn level when the final whistle sounded (2-12 to 1-15). Multyfarnham were fastest out of the traps and in the first period of extra time added 1-2 to their total. Shamrocks responded with 0-2 but time escaped them and Multyfarnham moved on to the championship semi-final.

The season is now over for this group of footballers as far as the minor grade is concerned and the lads were personally disappointed but checked-out with their finest display of the season. Some are still eligible for the under-16 grade and have the championship in this grade to occupy them, others will be lining out at under-21 level shortly.  It hasn’t been an easy year for the players and management and Aidan O’Donoghue, his team of helpers and the panel of players deserve great credit for the commitment displayed all season.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Killian White;  Brandon Heffernan, Cormac Murphy, Darragh White;  Sam Gilmartin, Christy Fox, Mark Eivers;  Dj Fedronas and Ross Corroon;  Cian Roe, Cormac Hynes, Matthew Willoughby;  Kenneth O'Reilly, Corey Coyne, Andrew Connaughton. Subs (all used): Cathal Crowley, Sean Wiley, Dillon Matthews, Cormac Darby, Matthew Maslin.
