The Clubhouse Bar to reopen soon ...
The Good Times of the days of The Clubhouse Bar are on the way back as it reopens in its fully refurbished state very soon.
It was opened on 5 July 1991 and was officially opened on 28 April 2002 Séamus Ó Faoláin in its extended version. Westmeath defeated Derry (0-13 to 1-6) in a senior football tournament on the day with Shane Colleary, Kieran Ryan and Brian Morley lining out for Westmeath.
The Clubhouse hosted at least one wedding, two or more Mullingar Shamrocks dinner dances, several christening parties and a host of other events. Stars in Your Eyes had an off-Broadway type debut in The Clubhouse before moving to the Arts Centre. The Flanagan Cup victories of the 1990s and 2000 were all celebrated there and the convoy of cars from Athlone through Mullingar and all places in between after defeating Athlone in the 1992 final was an early highlight.
The 2002 World Cup (those were the days of Saipan) match between Spain and Ireland on the big screen on a Sunday morning was another special day with the place packed to the rafters, buzzing with atmosphere and Christy Heffernan serving Sunday lunches.
For many of the years it was sustained totally by voluntary labour. And there was the student barman who is now the Club Chairman who advised one of the customers to go easy on the vodka: “ It’s not water you are drinking.”
We thank Expert and Ken Glynn for the generous sponsorship of a 55-inch TV screen for the premises.
