Ladies Senior Football Championship: Milltown 0-16 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-2.
Taking on the All-Ireland champions on their home patch was never going to be easy and so it proved to be. The score line is indicative of a one-sided match but it hides a very committed performance by the Shamrocks ladies who battled hard throughout and played some very good patches of combined football over the hour. Over-elaboration and poor shooting prevented a much better scoring return. Preventing a Milltown goal was an achievement in itself and great defending by Carole Finch set the standards for the rest of the defenders. Goalkeeper Lauren McCormack also made some fine saves.
Shamrocks opened the scoring with an Emma Morris pointed free but despite wind and hill advantage this was Shamrocks only first-half score and Milltown established an 0-7 to 0-1 interval lead. Niamh Kennedy pointed early in the second-half to reduce the deficit but Milltown responded with six successive points before Emma Morris goaled (0-13 to 1-2). Milltown added 0-3 to secure the championship points. Shamrocks now play Tyrrellspass and will battle hard to retain their senior status.
Mullingar Shamrocks: Lauren McCormack; Melek Fagan, Carol Finch, Kirsti Dunne; Sophie Morris, Niamh Spellman, Áine Melody; Michelle Buckley and Tara Fagan; Emma Morris, Niamh Kennedy, Michelle Morris (Chloe Swarbrigg); Ciara Morris (Oriana Quinn), Honor McNamara, Gemma Kerrigan.
Under-12 Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 2-4 Moate 0-5.
Our under-12 girls had a great victory in Moate; trailing by 0-1 five minutes from the final whistle, two late goals secured the victory. Anne-Marie O'Reilly and Niamh Raeside in particular gave great displays in this match.
