ACL Div.1: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-14 Maryland 0-9.
Mullingar Shamrocks were fully deserving of their 0-5 victory over Maryland in this ACL Div. 1 match which also doubled as a first round Feis Cup game. With both Philly Shaw and Daragh Ryan unavailable, team management availed of the opportunity to introduce D. J. Fedronas to the onerous position for his first senior match for the club. The Westmeath county minor goalkeeper made an impressive debut and dealt capably with the shots that came his way and provided a varied menu of kick-outs as he confidently marshalled his defence. At the interval Shamrocks held an 0-6 to 0-4 lead over the wind assisted visitors. The versatile Paddy Joyce was responsible for 0-3 of the Shamrocks total and Seanie Daly, Donal O’Donoghue and Conor Moore landed 0-1 each. Keith Malinn kicked a few fine frees for Maryland. Although playing against the wind, Shamrocks were guilty of missing a number of very good scoring chances, a trend that continued into the second half. To repeat the words the much maligned Kieran McGeeney used in a different context during the week, Shamrocks conversion rate was poor on the night. This was partly due to the well organised defence of Maryland who have a strong system of defence in place. Ross Corroon pointed a free early in the second half and Seanie Daly added 0-5 to his tally; it was a night of excellent free taking for Seanie. Conor Moore and Billy Flynn added points from general play. David Martin, a veteran of the Westmeath All-Ireland minor champion team of 1995 scored a few fine second-half points for Maryland and reminded spectators that class is permanent.
