Junior Football Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 0-4 St Loman’s 3-13.
In a cold, wet and windy but immaculate Lakepoint Park on Friday night (20 May 2016) Mullingar Shamrocks produced a display exactly in tune with the conditions: miserable. It is impossible to extract any positives from this performance; player wise it was great to see Anthony Clinton make a comeback from his long-term serious injury and we also welcomed Mark McLoughlin back from New Zealand. Playing against the strong wind in the opening half Shamrocks registered their only score in tenth minute when Pearse Corroon and Anthony Clinton combined for the latter to shoot just over the Loman’s crossbar. The seven-point interval deficit was very manageable in the windy conditions but a goal from Niall McGurrin, the best player on the field, immediately after the interval effectively ended the game as a meaningful contest. Ross Corroon pointed a 45 and scored a good point from play; Paul Aherne also pointed a free to bring Shamrocks total to 0-4 when the referee called a halt to the evening’s misery. St Loman’s accumulated 3-13 to record the most comfortable of victories.
Shamrocks: Daragh Ryan; Kyle Maguire, Robert Ryan, Ryan Blundell; Sam Gilmartin (Paul Aherne, 0-1), Ross Corroon (0-2), Mark McLoughlin; Pearse Corroon and James Grogan; Micheál Burke (Alan Kevin), Dermot Curley, Neil Hannigan (Oisín Dolan); Ross Brady (Dale Johnston), Anthony Clinton (0-1) and Nathan Gavin.
