Under-12 League: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-6 St Loman’s 4-5
Mullingar Shamrocks continued their unbeaten run in the under-12 league on Wednesday night (4 May) with a hard-earned but fully deserved victory over our neighbours. Both teams and their mentors deserve great credit for the standard of football displayed on the night. The tackling, the fielding, the passing and score taking would do justice to any grade of football. Wind assisted Shamrocks opened the scoring with a goal but St Loman’s replied in some style and added 1-3 to the scoreboard in the opening quarter. Shamrocks dominated for the rest of the half and goals from Jason Nevin and some fine points, especially the brace from Shane Ormsby, contributed to an interval lead of 4-5 to 1-3.
The second-half told a very different story and an early goal by St Loman’s established a trend that continued for most of the half. Two more goals boosted the boys in blue still further and reduced the deficit to a very manageable 3 points with just 10 minutes remaining. Shamrock managed to string a few good attacks together one of which yielded a 45 which Shane Ormsby dispatched to the St Loman’s net, Both teams traded points in the closing stages and Shamrocks survived some scary moments but with good defending managed to hold out for a well-deserved 5-6 to 4-5 victory. A special mention goes to Nathan McLoughlin at corner-back, Conor Fagan who moved to wing back and midfielder Daragh Hughes who had great games. However the joint players of the match were Jason Nevin and Conor Kelly who had an outstanding games for Shamrocks. A second-match was also staged on the night between Shamrocks and St Loman’s in which victory was secured by the latter.
