Under-16 Football League: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-8 The Downs 3-13.
This meeting of the 2014 under-14 champions Mullingar Shamrocks and the 2015 champions The Downs ended with a comfortable victory for the latter. Dylan Murphy opened the scoring in the first minute but this was the only occasion Shamrocks held the lead. A fine pointed free by Matthew Maslin and a goal form Brandon Heffernan in the twenty-fifth minute reduced the deficit to manageable proportions (1-6 to 1-2) but The Downs responded almost immediately with a goal following a brilliant Dylan Matthews save to establish a comfortable interval lead of 2-6 to 1-2.
A third goal for The Downs early in the second-half ended the game as a contest but Shamrocks battled to the end and good points from Cormac Hynes (0-3), Trevor Keena (0-2) and an excellent Cormac Darby effort provided glimpses of the type of form that won this group of players the under-14 championship.
