Gaelic 4 Mothers & Others Under Lights ...
The Mullingar Shamrocks G4M&O team had their second outing of the year on Saturday evening last under the lights in Springfield with Tyrrellspass the visitors. The improvement in this side over the past 12 months has been remarkable and they competed valiantly against a determined and experienced visiting side. Tyrrellspass started well and established an early lead with their forwards showing a remarkable level of accuracy. Gradually however, the Shamrocks ladies began to find their feet as their loyal supporters roared encouragement from the sideline. Goalkeeper Aisha Keegan grew in confidence as the game progressed and her kick outs were long and accurate. The A team of Aimee Forde, Alma Casey and Aileen Daly were tenacious and clever in their tackling in the full back line and Amy Eivers, Sheila Aherne and Joan Leonard were excellent in a half back line that exerted dominance as the match progressed and made life very difficult for the Tyrrellspass attackers in the second half especially. At midfield, Róisin Masterson, Ciara Keegan Amy Eivers Kelly and Maria Carroll displayed great fitness levels as they worked tirelessly up and down the pitch and this sector ensured a steady supply of possession to a shamrocks forward division that kept the scoreboard ticking. Helen Hassett, Emma McCabe, Marie Flood and Aoife Austin were a real handful for the opposing rearguard with Marie notching the shamrocks goal midway through the half. Team manager Paul Aherne and his talented assistant Karen Hegarty were delighted with their side’s display with the injured Debbie Newman on hand to lend additional advice on the sideline. After the match, players from both sides enjoyed the legendary Mullingar Shamrocks’ hospitality in the clubhouse. Our thanks to Tyrrellspass for travelling and to Seán Óg Hynes who proved a very fair and competent referee. Any young man who can handle 30 competitive females on a pitch deserves the utmost praise! The Gaelic for mothers and others has been a great addition to the club and the players deserve great credit. Well done. Result: Like all matches in the Under-8 grades and under this too was a draw.
