Under-14 Double

LGF Under-14 Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-4 Shandonagh 2-5.

On Tuesday evening the Mullingar Shamrocks girls played their third Championship game in the group against near neighbours Shandonagh in the Harbour Field. Both teams had been unbeaten in the group up to this game so it was always going to be a good encounter!
With all holidays and Gaeltacht stints over both teams were at full strength! The game started at huge pace with the Shamrock girls working very hard together to get the ball into the forwards. In particular Niamh Raeside and Jasmine Haugh were brilliant in midfield winning ball and supporting forwards.

The Shamrocks forwards were hungry and after a few efforts on the wrong side of post, they settled and three superb worked goals from Ellie O ' Sullivan Sexton ,Emily Flynn and Mia Gilligan in the opening half followed by two well taken points from Mia, and Molly Byrne after a great run, the Shamrocks girls led at halftime 3-2 to 0-3.

The second half saw Shandonagh battling hard to get back into the game with Shamrocks backs under a lot of pressure but they stood strong and worked the ball out well at every chance. Shandonagh goaled but the Shamrocks girls never gave up and got the ball back into forwards early where Ellie O Sullivan Sexton got her second goal; top scorer on the night Mia Gilligan also got her second goal and added 0-2 points to finish. There were some great individual performances for Shamrocks with Sinead Sweeney playing her first game in goals, all the backs were very solid with Katie Starr, Anne Maria O Reilly and Abby Smith in particularly good form and in the forwards Molly Byrne, Ellie O Sullivan Sexton, Ciara Moore and Mia Gilligan stood out. The full time score of Shamrocks 5-4 to Shandonagh’s 2-5 means the Mullingar Shamrocks girls top the group and have qualified for the semi-final
