Under-14 LGF win championship v Loughnavalley
Under-14 LGF Championship: Mullingar Shamrocks 5-8 Loughnavalley 3-6
Mullingar Shamrocks under-14 girls played host to Loughnavalley in their first round championship match on a beautiful warm summer’s evening in Springfield on Tuesday night.
The visitors started the stronger and within two minutes they had their first point of the game. Despite the pressure on the Shamrocks backs in the first half, they battled with great determination and this work-rate and tackling always kept the game within touching distance while at the other end the scores were just not coming!
After quick refreshments, and a few team changes at the interval, the Shamrocks girls emerged and got stuck right into the game. Some great combination play between midfielders Jasmine Haugh and Anne-Marie O’ Reilly with forwards Mia Gilligan and Ellie O’Sullivan Sexton produced some brilliant scores. Both wing half forwards Jodie Aherne and Tamara Molloy also won some great possession, especially from kickouts, to set up some great attacks.
In defence Robin Wrafter, Ruth Langtry, Abby Smith and Katie Starr all had very solid performances while Anne-Marie O’ Reilly was brilliant in midfield, maybe we have found a new position for Anne-Marie. Both teams were awarded -penalties with only Shamrocks converting with a brilliant strike by Mia Gilligan in the second half which helped to secure a well-deserved victory for the Mullingar Shamrocks girls on a 5-8 to 3-6 score-line.
