Minor Football League: Mullingar Shamrocks 3-12 Multyfarnham 1-13

Our minors had a good win last Wednesday night against the table toppers Multyfarnham in what was a good open game of football with some good play and scores from both teams. Goals from Shamrocks at crucial times decided the contest. Shamrocks started the brighter going four points up with scores from Mathew Maslin and the accurate Trevor Keena. Dylan Matthew got the key score of the half with a goal after one of his typical strong runs from mid field. Multy finished the half stronger and Shamrocks went in four points up after playing with a strong wind.

Shamrocks started the second half like the first and scored two goals within five minutes, the first coming from a penalty from Trevor Keena. John O’Reilly added a third goal and good points from Zach Aherne among others kept Shamrocks ahead. Shamrocks had some good performances throughout with Brian Reidy and Mark Eivers manning the central defensive positions which helped keep the Multy score down. Overall a good win for Shamrocks in what was their third game in the group.

Minor Football League: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-17 Garrycastle 3-4

Our minors continued with the good form displayed in earlier rounds of this competition with a good win over Garrycastle on Sunday evening. Shamrocks dominated large stretches of this game but the concession of three goals kept the Garrycastle interest alive. Shamrocks started quickly and Matthew Maslin kicked three points in the opening 10 minutes to Garrycastle’s single point. Trevor Keena, Dillon Matthews, Adam McCormack, Jack Gillen and Cormac Hynes also added points to stretch Shamrocks lead to 0-8 to 0-1. Some direct running by Garrycastle at this stage paid dividends and produced a goal, followed quickly by a point to cut the deficit to two points. Shamrocks responded well and Matthew Maslin knocked over two more points to make the half-time score 0-10 to 1-3. On the restart Garrycastle grabbed possession and raced through the middle and once again goaled; Shamrocks now had only a single point lead to show for all their good work. Matthew Maslin steadied matters with a point and then turned creator for a Zach Aherne point. Jack Gillen and Garrycastle exchanged points (0-13 to 2-4).

Mid-way through the second half a Joe Carmody penalty goal levelled the match but Shamrocks reacted positively to this setback and held Garrycastle scoreless for the remainder and goal by Zach Aherne (after superb work by Jack Kelly) and two points from the lethal boot of Matthew Maslin sealed the victory. It was fitting that Maslin signed off with two points as on the night he gave a superb display of forward play and ended the match with 0-9 to his credit.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Sean Óg Hynes, Josh Haugh (Emmet Walsh), Brian Reidy, Peter Baine, Cian Fox, Marc Eivers, Jack Kelly, Dillon Matthews (0-1), Trevor Keena (0-2), Adam McCormack (0-1), Cormac Hynes (0-1), John O’Reilly, Mathew Maslin (0-9), Jack Gillen (0-2), Peter Hynes (Zach Aherne, 1-1).
