When the annals of Mullingar Shamrocks are compiled. Betty’s eldest son Peter will feature as one of our greatest players. A consistently excellent underage player, initially in the Street Leagues and then with Shamrocks at underage level, Peter enjoyed a stellar career for club, university and county. A Sigerson cup winner in 1985, Peter captained our championship winning side in 1987 and gave wonderful service as a stylish and most sporting wing back. Mullingar’s loss through work became Skerries Harps gain with Betty’s grandsons Jack and Stephen starring for the Dublin club. The Westmeath link was maintained with Jack and Stephen regulars for the county side in recent seasons, both winning Tailteann cup medals in 2022. The Smith family link to Springfield was in evidence only 13 months ago when Betty’s three sons sold Christmas trees in the club grounds with Shamrocks gaining much needed funds thanks to Peter, David and Henry’s efforts.
May Betty Rest In Peace.
