A trip down memory lane.

Earlier this week we highlighted on these pages the achievement of Colaiste Mhuire in reaching the Leinster Colleges’ final for the first time in 37 years. A former player from that 88 side, Ivan O’ Connor, got in touch to share some memories of that occasion. The final was played in Croke Park as the curtain raiser to a National football league encounter between Dublin and Longford.
There were no fewer than 11 Shamrocks’ players on the starting fifteen with four more listed on the subs. Well known names featured then include John Conlon at full back whose nephew Eoin is midfield on the present day Colaiste Mhuire side, Eddie Casey of course known for his dual sporting prowess and his business acumen, Dermot Monaghan’s younger brother Enda has just completed a successful stint as Shamrocks’ senior manager and Michael Devine was striving to emulate his older brother Neil (Nelly) who sadly passed away in July 2023.

Colaiste Mhuire were beaten by a Paul Victory inspired St. Mel’s side in 1988 as the Longford academy attempted to retain their All Ireland title. Hopefully the Mullingar school will fare better on February 8th against Moate Community School or Athy. Many thanks to Ivan for getting in touch.
