Feis Cup: semi-final: Mullingar Shamrocks 1-15 St Loman’s 2-8.

This Feis Cup semi-final, played at Lakepoint Park, between two sides missing some of their  lead players provided a gentle enough preliminary to the main event scheduled for later in the month. This occasion was several degrees below the intensity and competitiveness that is likely to feature  when the two clubs match-up in the championship.

Mullingar Shamrocks were comfortable winners on this occasion and led at half-time by 1-9 to 0-4. Darren Keena with a fine point opened the scoring from the first attack of the evening which was neutralised by St Loman’s opening score a point from a Ken Casey free, the first of six points (and a goal) scored by the Offaly man on the night. A great Brendan O’Reilly run set-up Denis Corroon for a point and his fellow wing-back Neil Hannigan with a superb pass provided a similar opening which was finished by Donal O’Donoghue (0-3 to 0-1). Another Shamrocks move that began with a great piece of tackling by Eddie Moore back in the full-back line ended with a Donal O’Donoghue goal. Four points in succession from Denis Corroon and one each from Darren Keena and Tye Adamson brought Shamrocks interval total to 1-9 with Kieran Lynam (0-1) and Ken Casey (0-3) compiling the St Loman’s tally of (0-4).

Although outscored (2-4 to 0-6) in the second-half, Shamrocks were never really threatened, the St Loman’s second goal by Ken Casey was scored with the final kick of the game following a misadventure in the Shamrocks defence. Simon Quinn and Patrick Fagan added their names to the list of Shamrocks scorers, Darren Keena scored a beauty after great preliminary work by Efi and Simon Quinn and first-half scorers Denis Corroon, Donal O’Donoghue and Tye Adamson also added to their total.

Mullingar Shamrocks: Philly Shaw; Efi Siode, Eddie Moore, David Coyne; Brendan O’Reilly, Micheál Curley, Neil Hannigan (Pearse Corroon); Denis Corroon (0-6) and Darragh Daly; Patrick Fagan (0-1), Simon Quinn (0-1), Tye Adamson (0-2) [Nathan Smith]; Darren Keena (0-3) [Cormac Murphy], Donal O’Donoghue (1-2), Paddy Joyce (Eamonn Breslin)
