Village Barn Senior LGF Championship: St Loman’s 2-14 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-4

Mullingar Shamrocks LGF senior team enjoyed the luxury of playing their final match of the Village Barn Senior Football Championship with nothing at stake and their objective for the season achieved – a bit like St Malachy’s against Mullingar Shamrocks in the Shay Murtagh Precast Senior Football the previous week with similar results. That’s what happens when one team has nothing to play for and the other is in full championship mode. Playing against a strong breeze, Mullingar Shamrocks competed well for the first twenty minutes and trailed by 0-9 to 1-1 with Anna Jones (0-1) and Grace Daly responsible for the Shamrocks goal. However, 2-2 scored by St Loman’s before the interval ended the game as a contest.
The vey fit and impressive St Loman’s team continued to press during the second half as Shamrocks availed of the opportunity to introduce several panel members to senior championship football. Karen Hegarty, Anna Jones and Chloe Smullen were the Shamrocks second half scorers as Katie Kelly continues to impress in goal.
We should recognize the fact that Sophie Hegarty returned to senior action this season after twelve months on the sideline with the dreaded cruciate ligament injury. Sophie now tells us that she played her last match last Saturday. If this is so, we thank Sophie for her great service to Shamrocks as a player over the past several years – a role model for all our younger players in her dedication to the club.
As stated at the outset our objectives for the season were achieved with our victory over Garrycastle – senior status was preserved, a key objective and despite the number of county players involved and consequently unavailable, we also retained our Division 1 League status.
Thanks to our management team led by Seamus and the playing panel who worked so hard all season.
