ACL Div. 5 Mullingar Shamrocks 2-17 Garrycastle 2-8

Our Division 5 team maintained their interest in the ultimate destination of this league with this essential win over Garrycastle with a victory margin that was also needed to keep our hopes alive. A win by a few points in our final match against Ballymore is still a must if we are to qualify for the final of this competition. Shamrocks began impressively and Ross Corroon kicked two points in the first minute. David Gavin and Brendan O’Reilly added two more and after ten minutes Shamrocks led by 0-4 to 0-1. Ross Corroon scored his third point and cousin Gary scored the equivalent with a single shot to put Shamrocks into a seven-point lead (1-5 to 0-1). In the remaining minutes Garrycastle added 0-4 to Shamrocks 0-2 scored by Mickey McKnight and David Gavin and at half-time the score read 1-7 to 0-5 in favour of Shamrocks.

Both sides exchanged points after the interval (Gary Corroon 0-1)and a Niall Hannigan goal bound shot that struck the post rescued Garrycastle. They responded with a goal from a quickly taken free and added a point to reduce the deficit to a minimum. With the momentum in Garrycastle’s favour it seemed as if Shamrocks interest in the league was about to be terminated. However, the team responded very well and regained the initiative and with six good points from Ross Corroon (0-2), Pearse Corroon, David Gavin, Kenneth O’Reilly and Gary Corroon established a six-point lead.  Some of these sores were very fine long-range efforts. This was increased to nine when Pearse Corroon, and the O’Reilly brothers added points and Matthew Willoughby was seen to good effect. A Paul Mulvihill penalty goal reduced the deficit but Shamrocks worked the ball downfield from the restart and with the last kick of the match Pearse Corroon goaled to secure the vital nine-point win.
