It was our pleasure to host the New York senior football team in Springfield this afternoon as they staged a light training session to recover from the trans-Atlantic flight as they prepared for their Tailteann Cup quarter-final v Laois in Portlaoise on Sunday at 12.30 pm.
Refreshments were provided after the session with ex-Tang GAA clubman, Jeff Farrell, Chairperson of the Westmeath Hurling and Football Club New York, one of the men in charge. Israel Illunga, the former Westmeathgaaofficial and Rosemount GAA footballer is also part of the panel and made a return visit to Springfield.
It was a real multi-national occasion as Spanish students on a school tour were very interested and very cold observers of the session.
Former Mullingar Shamrocks player Killian Butler presented the club with a signed New York jersey which is being framed as you read these notes and will provide a novel addition to the memorabilia on the wall.
Best of luck to the team and management on Sunday.
