Under-12 Football League: Mullingar Shamrocks 3-14 Athlone 1-9
Mullingar Shamrocks and Athlone played a very good game of football on Wednesday evening in Springfield; both sides are to be commended on the level of skill displayed. The sides were level at the interval (1-7 each), the Shamrocks goal coming from Shane Ormsby. A hand injury forced Killian Kelly to retire during this half. Shamrocks played much better football in the second, were first to the ball and made good use of their possession. The teams exchanged points on resumption and a series of unanswered scores by Shamrocks secured the victory. A great Ryan Kelly point was followed by two opportunist goals scored by Alex Sheerin. Alex was the one who displayed the striker’s instinct on the night and like all good goal scorers he was on hand to tap the bell home after the Athlone goalkeeper had saved well from a Regan Kelly shot. Alex showed great speed of thought and reactions to punch home his second goal minutes later to guarantee the Shamrocks victory. Matthew Ryan, Shane Ormsby and Alex Sheerin added points before the final whistle.
Mullingar Shamrocks: William O’Reilly; Karl Mulherne, Killian Kelly, Peter Finch Conor Heffernan, Tadgh Sheridan, Shane Ormsby, Matthew Ryan, John Ryan, Ryan Kelly, Donnacha Maguire, Alex Sheerin, Gavin Pierce, Matthew Shaw, Dylan Carey, Conor Doran.
Note 1: as is usual with these fixtures a second match was played between the younger players of both clubs and in this game Shamrocks emerged victorious on a 4-14 to 3-10 scoreline.
Note 2: The first match was refereed by Tye Adamson and it is great to see one of our senior players spare the time to help at under-age level. Tye was also very involved in our Easter Skills Camp. Well Done Tye.
