ACL Div.2 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-7 St Malachys 1-2

Another low scoring game that Shamrocks and Malachy’s seem to specialise in when they meet. On this occasion, St Malachy’s completed their scoring in the opening ten minutes but that won’t worry the Dysart boys when the championship comes around. Ollie MacNamara and Niall Hannigan pointed for Shamrocks before Morgan Gavigan eluded the Shamrocks defence to score the only goal of the hour to put St Malachy’s ahead. Donal Lane responded with a point for Shamrocks to equalise before St Malachy’s replied with points from Cian Gavigan and Jack Gallagher. That was it then for a very understrength Malachy’s. Ollie MacNamara and Ross Corroon added two points before the interval to tie the game (0-5 to 1-2).The same two players scored two superb second half points to collect the valuable league points. Both were from frees from a distance and into the wind, Ollie kicking from the hands and Ross off the ground. Two excellent scores.

The return to active service of Philly Shaw and Zach Ahern was most welcome; Zach did some fine fielding and Philly with some timely advances in the second half prevented a few goal scoring opportunities. The restarts were good too.

ACL Div.5 Mullingar 1-11 Castletown Finea/Coole-Whitehall 3-7

Our Div. 5 team were unlucky against CFCW in their ACL Div. 5 game played in Springfield on Saturday evening after delivering a good overall performance. Mullingar Shamrocks led at the interval 1-7 to 1-4 the goal created by Gary Corroon who set up Jordan Awunah who finished to the net. Ciarán Curley kicked a few outrageous points to prove that class really is permanent.

Playing against the wind in the second half it seemed as if Mullingar Shamrocks would hold out but a quickly taken free unhinged the Shamrocks defence and a CFCW forward shot past Mikey Curley, who pulled off several great saves over hour, for the vital winning goal.

ACL Div.1 Mullingar Shamrocks 1-7 St Loman’s 1-12

A couple of minute’s play made all the difference in this closely contested ACL Div.1 match played in miserable conditions in Springfield on Saturday afternoon. A Denis Corroon pointed free had levelled matters at 0-10 to 1-7 in the twentieth minute of the second half. From the restart, St Loman’s gained possession and a foul by Lorcan Smyth earned Lorcan a second yellow. Loman’s attacked from the right wing back position and Sean Flanagan pointed from long range. The restart was turned over and T. J Cox side-footed the Shane Dempsey pass to the net to secure an 0-4 point lead for the county champions. Game over more or less, and Rory Sheehan added another point to secure the two league points.

Wind assisted Mullingar Shamrocks held an interval lead of 1-5 to 0-6 after starting slowly falling behind to points by Shane Dempsey and Rory Sheehan. Pointed frees by Denis Corroon and Dean Moore levelled matters before another couple of Shane Dempsey points edged St Loman’s ahead. Davy Coyne was black carded and instead of falling behind Shamrocks drew level with points from Patrick Fagan and another Denis Corroon pointed free. Shane Ormsby fielded well from the restart from Denis’s free, and ignored the possibilities of calling a mark. Instead, he dispatched an inch perfect pass to Dean Moore who blasted the ball to the Loman’s net. Sometimes the simplest ways are best. One catch, two kicks and three points added to the scoreboard. T. J. Cox pointed. We came close to a second goal minutes later when a great move began with a Brendan O’Reilly interception ended with John O’Reilly through on goal. This time the Loman’s goalkeeper saved well and deflected John’s shot over. A Shane Dempsey pointed free closed the first half scoring with the new Home Instead scoreboard reading Mullingar Shamrocks 1-5 to 0-6.

David Whelan was the first on the second half scoreboard and Shane Dempsey pointed twice to establish a Loman’s lead that was immediately cancelled by a Brain Guerin point. A quickly taken 45 caught Shamrocks relaxing and Rory Sheehan pointed. The Denis Corroon pointed free mentioned above drew the sides level before St Loman’s stepped up for the crucial scores.
