Our recent county final victory was a poignant occasion for Madge, Damien, Brendan, Aisling and Fiona Nolan as the date coincided with the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Seán Nolan, a man who gave outstanding service to Mullingar Shamrocks, the Pearses Hurling Club when it operated, Oliver Plunketts and Westmeath GAA in general. Seán's sons Damien and Brendan were present in Cusack Park on the occasion of the historic all-Mullingar final, Brendan travelling from California for the weekend and Damian from Paris.

Seán was an extraordinary life-long servant of Mullingar Shamrocks and held various offices including treasurer and PRO and was also assistant secretary of the Westmeath GAA board for many years. At the time of his death, Seán was in the process of organising a function to recognise the anniversary of Micheál O'Hehir's first commentary on a GAA match, the All-Ireland semi-final between Monaghan and Galway which was played in Cusack Park in August 1938 from Cusack Park (Yes, it was played in Cusack Park and Monaghan were in the semi-final).

Seán was also a lover of the Irish language and never passed on an opportunity to promote the language or use it in conversation. Seán was Station Master at Mullingar Railway Station where a very visible notice informed customers that if they wished to converse in Irish or conduct their business through the medium, then Seán Nolan was available to facilitate them.

Seán and his brother Davy were natives of St Bridget's Terrace an area that supplied several dual players to the Mullingar Shamrocks and Pearses Club in the 1960s. Davy Nolan was a key player on the Mullingar Shamrocks team that won county titles in 1964 and 1966 and on the Pearses Club that won the county senior hurling title in 1962 and represented the county in both codes for many years.
