Congratulations to Robbie McCarthy on a magnificent victory – probably his finest achievement in a career stacked high in magnificence – in the USA Open Handball Championship. Robbie defeated the top three American players Sean Lenning, Mando Oritz and Luis Mareno on his way to landing the title.

Robbie McCarthy impressively took down top American players Luis Moreno (21-20, 21-7) and then blitzed top seeded American star Sean Lenning 21-3, 21-8 to qualify for the final. In the final it was McCarthy who stole the early march, with his classy all round court play dominating Mando Ortiz, winning 21-5. The attacking Ortiz did not wilt though and forced the current All-Ireland champion McCarthy to dig deep in the second, before the Mullingar man sealed victory 21-17 in an absorbing match.

Congrats Robbie. Robbie Snr did well too and won the US Open Over-50 title and Aoife reached the semi-final of the women's championship.
