LGF Div. 3 Mullingar Shamrocks 0-7 Garrycastle 4-8.
Mullingar Shamrocks ladies played their opening game of the 2019 season in a cold and windswept Springfield. Shamrocks won the toss and opted to play with the strong wind in the opening half. Shamrocks mid-fielder Susanna Buckley opened the scoring with an early point. Throughout the first half Shamrocks had a lot of possession but failed to use this effectively and translate it into scores. Centre-forward Emma Morris was next to score and Casey McDermott followed with another point. Garrycastle launched a number of attacks forcing Mullingar keeper Isabelle Clinton to come off her line and deal with the threat. Unfortunately late in the first half a close in free by Garrycastle dropped just over a defenders head and into the Shamrocks net. Susanna Buckley scored another point before half-time to leave Shamrocks ahead by the narrowest of margins, 0-4 to 1-0. Given the conditions on the day, it was always going to be a game of two halves. The Shamrocks girls continued to play well with lots of possession in the second half but the sharper Garrycastle forwards made better use of their scoring opportunities. Despite points from Alison Bane, Casey Mc Dermot and Emma Morris (from a free), Garrycastle ran out comfortable winners on a score line of 4-8 to 0-7. Mullingar Shamrocks were left to rue multiple squandered opportunities to score, particularly in the first half.
