The death of Bishopsgate Street resident Michael Cummins, on Tuesday 12 January, a few weeks short of his 101st birthday has severed the last remaining link with the Mullingar Hurling Club team that won the 1935 (yes!) Westmeath senior hurling title. Michael was also a member of the Mullingar team that won the 1944 county title. Clubs representing the town of Mullingar have only won four county senior titles and Michael was a member of two of these teams. A devout Catholic, a lover of the Irish language and of hurling and although not associated with the Mullingar Shamrocks club Michael Cummins was one of those who kept the faint flicker of the GAA alive in Mullingar during the 1930s and 1940s. Fitness Centre Classes
As we await the start of the football season there is plenty of activity taking place in Springfield with a number of classes up and running. If you wish to join a spinning class contact Paula at 087-2030510 and she will get you organised. Wednesday evening is Pilates evening and again Paula or Grainne at 085-7423100 will explain what is involved. The Pilates sessions are geared towards the beginner or intermediate stage. Both Pilates and spinning are open to the general public and membership of our Fitness Centre is not necessary to become involved.
Some slots are available on our Astro-Turf and Michael Healy is the one to contact if you are interested. Michael can be contacted at 086-0824267. He will also explain the membership details for our Fitness Centre if you are interested.
If you are interested in a less physically and more mentally challenging activity then Thursday night is the night for you. This is Bingo night and Pat Collins, Terry O’Dowd, Detty Cornally, Ray Twomey and their helpers are keen to recruit some more players. Why not organise a few friends and give it a try. Up to €1500 in prize money is distributed each night! Once again the venue is Mullingar Shamrocks Clubhouse in Springfield, the night is Thursday and the first numbers are called at 8.00pm.
